I had the pleasure of attending New York Fashion Week last fall to preview the beauty moments of spring and summer, and let me tell you: it got me really excited about the makeup trends for 2023. I immediately wanted to cover my cheeks with a bright cream blush, ditch my skin tone for full coverage foundation and order all the glowing highlighters on the internet. Trust me when I say that 2023 will be the year that everyone has fun, is fun, and wears makeup on a whim, whether that means wearing colored eyeliner for work or completely covering your eyebrows like Bella Hadid.
Not sure where to start? That’s where I came in. I chatted with makeup artists Victor Anaya, Nydia Figueroa and Jamie Greenberg to get all the details on the biggest trends for the 2023 runways, red carpets and even TikToks. Keep scrolling below to see all of our favorite looks.
1.90s makeup for 2023
If there’s one decade in the past few years that has had the biggest impact on makeup, it’s definitely the ’90s, with all the rich, warm brown shades we’ve been applying to our eyes and lips lately, says Anaya. in 2023, Anaya says the retro look will be more trash rock than supermodel. Think smudgy smoky black eyeliner and eyeshadow, and chocolate and mid-tone brown lip liner under a thin layer of lip gloss.
2.Underpainting
bb, there are no harsh lines to be seen this year. Underpainting (a makeup technique that makes skin look smooth and fresh) has been trending on TikTok ever since makeup artist Mary Phillips (whose clients include Hailey Bieber, Kendall Jenner) demonstrated The idea is simple: take your makeup routine and turn it upside down. So for Phillips, that means blending her contour and eye concealer first, then applying her foundation. The application,” Figueroa says of the technique, “makes your skin look seamlessly blended”
3.Cool-toned eyes for 2023
Figueroa notes that cool-toned eyeshadows will be the new neutral eyeshadows in 2023, like dusty fuchsia, blush and smoky gray. anaya. it has a ~glamorous~ look, especially when you pair it with a winged pencil to create a smudged effect, as makeup artist Patrick Ta created above Gigi Hadid. Apply some rose eyeshadow palette on your eyelids like Patrick Ta Major Dimension Rose Eyeshadow Palette or my favorite Glossier Monochromes Palette in Heather.
4.The Siren’s Eye
Figueroa says, “A lot of my clients ask me to create the siren eye trend on them.” This is basically a smudged, winged eyeliner with a line in the inner corner of the eye as well. Get defined wings by tapping the waterproof eyeliner on the tip an angled eyeliner brush and then poking it on the inner and outer corners of your eyes,” she says.
5.Mid-toned blush
Anaya says, “Blush is a big focus for 2023, and the rosy, airbrushed look is really popular.” In fact, one of the biggest trends we’re seeing right now is what TikTok calls “mid-toned blush”-that is, a technique that blurs blush and eye makeup together for a seamless look. Here’s how it works: As the final step in your makeup routine, lightly bake under your eyes with a fluffy smudge brush and a clear setting powder, then sprinkle a second blush around the edges, one shade lighter than the one you first used, spreading the translucent powder into the blush.
6.Minimal makeup
For years, “vegan makeup” has been a trend (Adut Akech, above, totally gets it), but by 2023, we’ll take it a step further and go virtually makeup-free, says makeup artist Jamie Greenberg, who says, “Today, people don’t want caked-on makeup; They want their makeup to look like their skin, not a bunch of heavy products.” The perfect middle ground between dewy and matte.
7.Shiny Cheekbones in 2023
I knew the days of dewy glow on my face were over when I saw the glittery “Generation Z Blur Selfie” take over my 2023 IG mentions. FWIW, I love this trend and find that powder highlighters from Rare Beauty, Charlotte Tilbury and Pat McGrath work best to create a serious glow in front of a camera flash.
8.The Pastel Look
Think of the latest color trend for 2023 as the dopamine look. there’s no right or wrong DIY method, as long as it involves color. Apply bright eyeshadow to your eyelids (like makeup artist Jo Baker did on Natasha Lyonne above). Try applying a generous amount of purple blush to your cheeks, as seen on the cheeks, forehead and chin of the models in the spring/summer show. Or make your look pop a little with a layer of neon pink lipstick. Whatever you choose, know that it will surely enhance your mood.
9.Concealed Eyebrows in 2023
Hey, if the recent mix of celebrities and fashion shows has inspired you to bleach your eyebrows, go for it. But if you’re afraid of commitment (again), try testing the look of bleached brows with a concealer. With your hand, tap a dollop of full-coverage concealer (like Kulfi Beauty Main Match Concealer, or use Sensorium Beauty’s Brow Engineer, which was designed specifically for this purpose), twist a spoolie through it, and brush across your brows. Continue to reload your bobbin and reapply until your brows are completely covered, then secure it with setting powder.
